PRASA and SATAWU negotiations collapse as union rejects 5.5% wage increase

JOHANNESBURG - Negotiations between the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) and the South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (SATAWU ) have collapsed once again, after the union rejected a 5.5% wage increase.
SATAWU said PRASA’s latest offer failed to include key employee benefits, including book allowances and compensation for overnight shifts.

The union is demanding a 15% salary increase and R3,000 housing allowance, a 70% medical aid subsidy and a non-retrenchment clause.
Spokesperson Amanda Tshemese said the union will not back down from its demands.
"We are not going to sign any agreement that does not include job security. If we are going to sign for that, we are prepared to. Why is it difficult for PRASA to sign this particular clause if they have no intention to retrench? The country is facing a high rate of unemployment. Millions in the country are unemployed."
