Johannesburg’s Department of Public Safety has warned all businesses in the city to comply with municipal by-laws or face closure.
Speaking at Wednesday’s safety media briefing, MMC for Public Safety Mgcini Tshwaku emphasised that by-law compliance is necessary to restore order in the metro.
Tshwaku noted that some businesses that have been operating outside the law have paid the price for their actions.
He added that the department was working with all relevant authorities to ensure law and order are maintained.
"There's a list of streets we're going to clean one by one, colleagues. One by one. But to our colleagues in JMPD, you do a by-law, you maintain it. That is the password. Do a by-law and maintain it. We have a meeting with the mayor this morning. We're discussing now the issues in terms of by-law enforcement and maintenance because we do a by-law, we have people that come there."
