Gaming has evolved from a mere hobby to a viable career, even in South Africa.
In October, 17-year-old Hamza Moosa from Johannesburg won a R25,000 cash prize after winning at EA's FC25 at the MTN Shift Gaming Experience.
After months of qualifiers and regional heats, the final brought together hundreds of spectators and players to Canal Walk in Cape Town.
Moosa, who plays for Goliath Gaming, outplayed the competition to take top honours.
He also recently represented South Africa at the Esports World Cup qualifier in Saudi Arabia.
Moosa says many people don’t realise how big the gaming world is, and much like other jobs, it requires skill, consistency, and smart planning.
"Gaming can be considered a career, and it’s a really big thing that is only getting even bigger in South Africa," he said.
"It’s the same as whether you are becoming a footballer or a cricketer; you also have to put the same effort into becoming a gamer. Some people are professionals in more than one game."
