Trade union Cosatu has joined calls for the Northwest and Gauteng governments to ensure that workers at northwest transport investment are paid their outstanding wages in full immediately
The call was initially made by workers union the South African transport and allied workers union
NTI workers have been facing prolonged non-payment of salaries due to financial distress, mismanagement, and legal battles surrounding the company's business rescue
The workers have staged several demonstrations with submissions that 14 months’ worth of wages are outstanding.
The entity was placed under business rescue with Thomas Samson as the business rescue practitioner – but a court later ordered Samson’s removal
Cosatu said it's angry that despite agreements to pay workers this month this has still not happened
Spokesperson Zanele Sabela said "Cosatu will urgently engage the minister of transport, Barbara Creecy, to intervene to find a permanent solution for NTI and simultaneously put pressure to ensure that workers are paid what is due to them immediately. The federation will also initiate discussion at Nedlac regarding the tightening of business rescue processes”
