African National Congress (ANC) Johannesburg region chairperson, Loyiso Masuku has been officially elected as the city’s first-ever Deputy Mayor.
Masuku was elected uncontested to the newly created role during a City Council session on Thursday afternoon.
The transition marks a significant shift in the city's executive structure.
Masuku previously served as the MMC for Finance, a portfolio that has now been incorporated into the Office of the Deputy Mayor.
With this appointment, the ANC now holds both the Mayor and Deputy Mayor positions within Johannesburg’s coalition-led government.
Council Speaker Margaret Arnolds officially announced the results following the formal nomination process.
During the proceedings, Masuku formally accepted the responsibility.
"I, Loyiso Masuku, hereby accept the nomination for the position of deputy executive mayor for the city of Johannesburg."
Speaker Arnolds confirmed the lack of opposition for the post, stating, “We only had one nomination. So Councillor Masuku has been duly elected as the deputy executive mayor of the city of Johannesburg.”
