CAPE TOWN - Western Cape Social Development MEC Sharna Fernandez said that she had met with the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) provincial management to discuss various pertinent issues, including the prolonged power outages in the central Karoo.
Several towns have been without power after weekend storms damaged power lines in the region.
Generators have been dispatched to help keep essential services running.
Fernandez said that SASSA has started working on getting water to its local offices in the affected areas for social grant beneficiaries and staff.

"The provincial Department of Social Development will work with SASSA to ensure that the agency activates the SRD, which will require assessments being conducted in households to determine who is most in need of assistance. In the meantime, the department is busy with the emergency procurement of food parcels."
