9 friends swim from Robben Island to Blouberg to raise funds for men's mental health
The group aims to raise funds for SADAG (South African Depression and Anxiety Group).
Zain Johnson (standing in for CapeTalk and 702's Africa Melane) speaks with Niall Maloney, Co-Founder of Currents for a Cause.
Listen below:
Maloney is one of nine friends taking on the icy Atlantic Robben Island swim to raise awareness and funds for men’s mental health.
The team plans to swim between 14 and 24 May (weather dependent) and cover 7.5 kilometers from Robben Island to Blouberg Beach.
Maloney says this is "something he's always wanted to do", and after chatting to friends who also had this swim on their bucket list, they decided to do it for a cause and make it happen.
The swim is also a fundraiser to raise R70,000, which will support SADAG's (South African Depression and Anxiety Group) 24-hour call centre’s running costs.
"Personally, I've dealt with some mental health issues and I know a couple of guys who's also had issues in the past so it's a cause close to our hearts."
- Niall Maloney, Co-Founder - Currents for a Cause
"This is the first challenge on our list, we want to go bigger and do more challenging swims and also raise more money... we're all very interested in carrying this on."
