Langa ward councillor, Lwazi Pakade, says his devastated family hopes justice will be served after the brutal murder of his younger brother, LEAP officer Yonke Pakade.

Yonke Pakade was off duty on Sunday when he was stabbed by three men, who left him for dead in Marikana informal settlement before stealing his car.

Asavela Ndamase, Thandalwethu Toto and Asemahle Pama made a brief appearance in the Athlone Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

The accused are charged with murder, robbery, theft and two counts of kidnapping after two women were found in Pakade's stolen car.

Lwazi Pakade hopes his brother's murder was not in vain.

"We do hope that now that the suspects have been arrested, we are going to get justice and he is going to get the justice that he deserves because he was a dedicated law enforcement officer."

City Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith, has called on the State to oppose bail for the three accused.

"We are imploring the magistrate to act strongly against these individuals to deny them bail. We do not believe that people who are capable of this should be allowed to walk free."

The matter was postponed to 21 October to give the State more time to obtain further particulars for a bail hearing.
