Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero has again labelled the metro a world-class city after hosting another successful 947 Ride Joburg on Sunday.
Morero was among the attendees at the annual race, where an estimated 30,000 cyclists took to the streets.
Cyclists tackled two major routes, the 97-kilometre road race and the 35-kilometre short ride, each showcasing the city’s beauty and grit.
Speaking on 947, Morero said work was being done to make Johannesburg a more cycle-friendly city.
"You’d know that in 2015, 2014 we rolled out cycling lanes, even in the townships. Unfortunately, most of them have not been used as we expected them to be used, so we must continue to inculcate the culture of riding."
Morero added that the race was a stamp of approval for the city’s hosting capabilities as Johannesburg prepares to host the massive G20 Leaders' Summit in November.
"Well, for the city, it’s an important event. Firstly, it demonstrates that our city has the capacity to host events of this magnitude, and it demonstrates that we are a world-class city."
