KKKA hails 2026 Tweede Nuwe Jaar a success despite mishaps

The Kaapse Klopse Karnival Association says the Tweede Nuwe Jaar festival was a success despite various complaints from spectators.

Sixteen minstrel troupes performed down Somerset Road in Green Point on Monday before taking part in a competition at the DHL Stadium.  

Spectators who gathered to witness the event complained about a change to the traditional route, a delayed start to the event, and waiting for more than an hour for each troupe to perform.

Cape Town's Tweede Nuwe Jaar festival, which was organised by the Kaapse Klopse Karnival Association, was due to start at 11:30 on Monday but only got going at 12:30.

Spectators who lined Somerset Road to catch a glimpse of the minstrels also complained about the long wait between each troupe's performance.

Kaapse Klopse Karnival Association chairperson Muneeb Gambeno believes the event was a success.

"Our attitude is we were super successful at delivering it and demonstrating that as an association we can organise a dual event on one day."   

Gambeno said the event ended at 11pm as scheduled, with no incidents and within permit parameters.

He said there were "dynamics at play", but he cannot disclose what caused the event to be delayed.
