Some residents in Coronationville believe the mixed reaction to the SANDF deployment stems from parents who are protecting their children involved in gangs.

At the BK Reid flats, parents said gangs are being formed by teenagers, some as young as nine years old.

Many parents have welcomed the arrival of soldiers, saying they hope to see arrests soon.

One woman told EWN her grandson was pressured to join the gangs after being expelled from school for bad behaviour.

“People know their children are naughty, but me, on my own, I am very happy. I hope they come back very soon, and they must stay here until we have peace.”
