Milnerton High assault: 8 accused forced to hand over phones in court

Eight Milnerton High School pupils charged with eight counts of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm were on Thursday forced to hand over their cellphones in court. 

Six of the accused were released on R2,000 bail, while two underage pupils, who face the same charges, were released into the custody of their parents.

The cellphones were handed to investigators to download any content that could be used as evidence in court.

The eight pupils appeared in the Cape Town Magistrates Court on Thursday, related to various incidents of alleged assault at the school.

Eight pupils this week lodged criminal complaints against the accused at the Milnerton Police Station.

On Thursday, six of the pupils appeared in one courtroom, while two underage co-accused appeared in the children's court next door.  

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson, Eric Ntabazalila: "We can confirm that the six were granted bail of R2,000 rand each, with strict conditions, which include that they must not directly or indirectly contact the witnesses as well as the complainants." 

The accused are also not allowed to enter the school premises and will write their exams at an alternative venue.

The matter was postponed to 20 January for further investigation.
